Winter Night

Word Warps
Quick track, got a new bass this last week and was excited to try it out! Lyrics are nonsensical about a cold, wintery night where I’m forced to go out late with friends and then get snowed into a bar.

Learned about the different types of modes, but didn’t actively incorporate that, sorry. Thanks for the push to read about something new though!

Lyrics
Verse 1
We were goin’ downtown the place I know
I gotta real long face, this smiles for show
Had enough of the night, it goes on and on
Won’t get relief till we see the dawn
Verse 2
Holed up for the night, cold’s creepin’ in
At least we gotta company, a bottle of gin
The warmth fades and I puff out a cloud
I hear it comin’ round, purple pushin’ plow
Verse 3
We’re gettin’ out of here, and goin’ to bed
Dreamy dopy dumb dreams in my head
If I wake while the suns still up
Please, knock me out please, buttercup
Chorus
And now I’m holed up in this bar, I won’t be gettin’ very far
If you know an outer space, a place where we can get away
So I’m hopin’ we can go
To a time where weekends weren’t so cold
That’s hard to do here
Cause winters walking we’re not clear
Looking for feedback on
Mixing? Can you understand the lyrics?

reminds me a lil of Franz Ferdinand, and I agree about early strokes lol.
some of the lyrics especially around the 1 min mark become a little fuzzy but if that’s all part of the mood I don’t necessarily think you need to change it

Damn, I’m humbled to even sound vaguely like those bands, thank you! I’m working on sounding clearer so I’ll keep that in mind.

best mix yet! just keeps getting better. how much fun is that grinding bass?? so great.

Yeahhh, thanks bud.

Yes—dark, hammered disco.
At the 1:02 mark, when the bass changes to a fuzzier tone, a lot of its body disappears. I think it’s super important for that to stick around! Comes back at 1:27 and feels better. If you need a suggestion of 1 or 12 fuzz pedals to buy, I gotchyou!

For the body of the tone to stick around* — in case that wasn’t clear.

Sick, definitely interested! I’ve been using the stock pedals in logic so I’m super out of my element in terms of getting a certain sound.

Hahaha yesssss this is like early strokes or something.

🙏🏾 Thanksss!

Yesss I have to echo everyone else here about how incredible this is. You write such catchy melodies! It’s been stuck in my head. It’s delightfully seedy and shady. “Buttercup” is such a good touch, I lol’ed.

I’m in for it the lols, thanks for the encouragement 🙂

this is so fantastic! the rawness creates instant nostalgia. reminiscent of some of some of my favorite bands before they got glitzy and produced. @@Kristophcheck this out!

Uhhhh yeeupp! This rocks. Bass line is fun as hell. I think he production is just right – Love me a dirty mix. Pulls out a bunch old feels for me a-la Vex Ruffin – Liars – The Intelligence. So fun. Dope! Thanks for this!

At first, when that first note was happening at the beginning, I was like: ok, what am I in for?
Then the beat drops and I literally (and Nora can confirm) was like “OH SHIT THIS IS BADASS. THIS IS EARLY WEEN.”
This is so short and lo-fi but is extremely musical. I really like the drum composition and sounds too. The lyrics are hilarious and weirdly catchy. The tones are trashy and sound great. What are those insane tones (at the intro, 1:18, and 1:41). Makes me want to eat some glue then go get some cheesesteaks.
Love the lyric: So I’m hopin’ we can go / To a time where weekends weren’t so cold
I think the arrangement/form is great – weird intro -> verse suddenly comes in out of nowhere and even the drums are caught off guard -> nice little tiny drum breaks scattered throughout -> mini solo -> finally a chorus -> more weirdness -> sudden end.
Check out Pure Guava by Ween if you haven’t already – third album – super early, lo-fi, funny and scary, and somehow badass and high quality. Your tune is one of the only songs that really gives me those vibes – I feel like it can be tempting for artists to squeeze out rough, lo-fi track that aren’t really finished, call it art and cite early Ween, and slap it on bandcamp, but those always run the risk of getting old or tiring. Songs on that album that remind me of this: Springtheme, Little Birdy, The Goin Gets Touch From the Getgo, Pumpin’ 4 The Man.
Great work!

Goin Gets Tough* From the Getgo.

Thanks for this! Your write-ups are always the best. Really appreciate the kind words and enthusiasm. And thanks for the introduction to Ween as well!

Wow — that lead instrument fits in so well — I’m not sure what it is but I dig it.
