Cricket on the S train

My dad and I wrote and recorded this song in just a couple of hours and had so. much. fun doing it (see outtakes). It’s our first try at writing anything together and I mostly just wanted to see whether we could enjoy it. We’re planning on taking ourselves a little more seriously next time, but until then — here’s a folk song about a cricket who rides the smallest, weirdest train in Brooklyn.

Walking around at night

Brooklyn city lights

Not a soul in sight

Except the cricket

The cricket

The cricket

Cricket who rides the S train

Not very large

Borne on a barge

His mother’s name was Marge

Oh the cricket

The cricket rides the S train

Nobody sees him but you

Lookin up from Franklin avenue

Passing through our backyards

His life is not very hard

All he’s got to do

Is ride on through

Two years go by

You might wonder why

He’s nowhere in sight

On the S train

The cricket

The cricket

The cricket

One of us regrets going with the banjo over guitar. What do you think?

Man I’m so late to the party but gd this is wonderful! You and your dad sound great together! Can’t wait to hear this live someday #thecricketsarebettterthanthebeatles

This is so sweet. There is something so mischievous and cute about crickets. In high school choir, I sang a different 90-second-long song in Italian about a cricket & yes, we would all look at each other with trickster grins just like the blokes in this video. Anyway, this made me smile, and it sounds great!

Hey! Makes me feel like it’s summer time. I take the S train pretty frequently to get to my partner’s place, and had never felt very inspired on it, but now thinking of this song will make me smile. And no regrets, I think the banjo adds motion and excitement (and is really nicely played).

Warm in the heart off this!!

Man talk about a swoosh!

This is so charming and funny. I certainly have no artistic criticism other than that you should have made this sooner.

The length, the ending, it’s just perfect, nice job y’all!

Oh my god the outtakes have me cracking up hahahah.

This warms my heart – the banjo feels absolutely perfect to me. I wish I knew a cricket who rode the S train.

Oh my god this is the most wholesome thing I’ve ever heard. That banjo is choice, by the way. I think the cricket plays a banjo too.

I love this. No regrets for the banjo, only for the cricket 😅

LOVE. this is so heartwarming. i agree with tyler about the vocal harmony at the end. your voices are like peanut butter and jelly – so different, but delicious together! so well done, xo.

Where’s that cricket even gotta go?

Banjo is GREAT here, it fits the theme. One of you is crazy.

I can feel the good time in this track. Final vocal harmony is delivered perfectly by the both of you. I squinted and nodded at the end.

😂 seriously, where does the cricket even need to be?

agasthya February 26, 2023 10:11pm

i love this cricket

Possibly my favorite last line of all time? No regrets on the banjo for me. Works well with the cricket sounds and general outdoors / au naturel feel of the recording. Point of curiosity: is this the first ever song about the S train? Did you do any research on that? Bit of a pioneer.

Awesome. You’re a great duo. I’m nervous for the cricket though.
