Good Morning Maida Vale
lizzie
Earth Tones
goodbyes
not one
paid for a window when they sent me on the run
long hair
too long
i packed nothing but the time for moving on
thank god
you lied to me cause it left me on my own
good morning
good morning life unlived
still don’t know how you sang to me but never to yourself
guess i won’t know why you’d reach for me but never want my help
stopped in the road i gave my blessings to the wind
making sense of what i can
peace with where i am
guess i’ve passed the time
i’ve started to be happy here
looked down and kicked the gravel
looked straight into my soul
and i know that it’s still snowing but i haven’t felt so cold since i left new york
good morning
good morning window pane
the sun spots
are warming me again
a very condensed songwriting process that happened in the pockets of time i had during a busy past two weeks. biggest of thanks to Z for helping me mix it at the eleventh hour 🫶🏻
this is my first ever songwriting attempt! it was really hard to figure out what i wanted to do. a lot of ideas came up. i knew immediately london was my place and knew what i wanted to say about it, but it was hard to transform those ideas into song. im still learning to play guitar and don’t know how to mix music, so it was difficult to imagine how i would incorporate other instruments or transform the song in mixing. so it made sense to me to start with what i know. i found singing over the drone really enjoyable for exploring different melodic patterns as it kind of harnessed the creativity – keeping it around prevented me from getting lost in my range. i’m very proud of myself and grateful for this community.
dedicated to my time in london, in the sweet embrace of a neighborhood there called maida vale. a time where i left the US (my home for 20 years) and deleted my phone number and social accounts in order to find myself and a better way of living. while there, i found my way to my spirituality and higher power. i left behind parts of myself that prevented me from listening to my heart. alone in a new place, i was able to step out of that mold and into myself.
thanks for listening. wishing you warmth and wellness.

Lizzie this is gorgeous! It’s really beautiful and does sound like it comes from the British Isles, so you absolutely nailed that part of the assignment. Your voice is so emotive and sits so beautifully on top of the drone. I really loved listening to it. It gives me a similar very compelling bittersweet feeling I get from Auld Lang Syne. Keep doing what you are doing. If this is your first song, I can’t wait to hear what you do next!

mateus! thank you! such a testament to how when we settle our mind on an intention, so many fragmented aspects of the outcome seem so unintentional. i wasn’t consciously choosing the sound of great britain, but of course there it is. i’m so glad it came through and that you enjoyed it. love the note about auld lang syne – such a huge compliment! xoxo

hey you’ve got a real knack for this! love how you wrote about the experience singing over the drone. this performance feels very natural. your pacing is extremely compelling. the singing feels very reactive and unencumbered—grown rather than made. well done.

i’m just so thrilled to be here! this has been so heartwarming. really appreciate the perception of “grown rather than made”. thank you for the pointed feedback – learning more and more each day, xo

Great! I second Sam on this. As someone who relies solely on chord changes to influence where my next vocal is gonna to go, it’s refreshing and impressive that you came up with an intricate and catchy vocal part over a single drone. And as your first song? Forget about it. This is pro level.
This is a specific note but the fade out is perfectly timed. It’s underrated to get a fade out just right. Excited to hear more.

i am so honored! (‘: it was really fun to let myself go anywhere. thank you so much. have to thank the genius of @@Z for the timing of the fade

Hey Lizzie! This is my first experience of your music. I love what I heard! I think it’s cool that you wrote a melody that (at least to me, with my limited knowledge of theory) sounds truly modal and doesn’t rely on implied chord changes. It reminds me of some lost ancient Celtic melody. And your voice rules. I look forward to hearing more.

i appreciate that reflection so much. i am very new to music and songwriting, so i think my lack of theory knowledge allowed me to wander a bit. it’s also nice to hear that it reminded you of a celtic melody because a big part of my time in the uk was exploring my english and celtic heritage. thank you so much, sam! this means a lot to me.

In minimal arrangements it’s cool how much impact the smallest things can have. Every line is retrospective but the “good morning” moments ‘hit hard’ because they look forward. Amazing way to end a song – it just leaves you excited for whatever comes next.

i didn’t even realize the perspectives shifting – i love that so much! thanks my dear xo

The vocal delivery is so perfect. Loving the reverb on the vocals as well. “Your sunlight is warming me again” is such a strong line to close on – really feeling this.

thank you! definitely a lot of ideas that needed to find their place. just glad they finally did.

The perplexing complexity of “good morning life unlived” followed by the bare simplicity of “good morning window pane” is really beautiful. I felt this one in my heart! Really nice work.

i’m so glad to hear that reflection. it’s on the precipice of understanding what will come next, but not quite there yet. thank you!

This is lovely morning meditation vibe

that actually nails the energy of that place for me. how quiet the mornings were and how you never knew what the day would bring.

Love how peaceful and raw this is, Lizzie. Excellent work tapping into the vulnerability required for a piece like this. Also love the delivery of “good morning” at 3:27—truly sincere-sounding, which can be difficult to capture.

feels great to hear that from you. thank you. and big love for the killer prompt! i definitely felt the jolt of inspo for this.
